The last time I mentioned my buddy Sergio Da Silva, it was within the context of him doing his usual thing and fighting the good fight on behalf of Montreal's nightlife and music and culture. You know, the stuff that makes Montreal Montreal. And may not always.
This time around it's more of the same, but it's well worth your time to read his rant (that I assume he posted to Twitter but which I saw on Instagram) even if you don't live in Montreal (I myself moved away in 2022 after an on-and-off 20 years there) because the same forces that are fucking that city up are probably fucking your city up. And, if you don't live in a city, it's still worth reading because even if it's not happening in your town (and it may well be happening in your town) you should be aware and your children should be aware and their friends should be aware that it has been made
painfully
and
abundantly
clear
there is a class of people whose only goal when they wake up in the morning is to extract as much value as possible from culture without ever contributing to or supporting culture
because they are so empty inside that they can only see experiencing art and music and theatre and and and
(by which I mean joy and community and camaraderie and solidarity and love and adventure and and and)
as a commodity or otherwise something to be sold and nothing more.
Living in a city a political act whether you want it to be or not, so if you're the type of person who goes to shows or who otherwise participates in nightlife in its various forms, you may as well align yourself with the people and places and artists and and and who keep the scenes you are a part of (or wish to be a part of) alive.
