november 14 etc
So I've been toying with an idea for about a month and it's been sticky enough that I feel like sharing it here.
The short version is that I am thinking of keeping my main blog here at Bear but altering the (week)daily post to be more bloggy and less linksy. The linksy stuff will move to a email newsletter thinger (i.e. DMail 2.0, but with a different name) that I'll probably build out at Ghost or maybe Buttondown. For the sports, trivia, and sports trivia fans out there, I haven't written Oddball for a few weeks for this exact reason, and that would probably also end up at Ghost or Buttondown.
On October 22 I wrote this:
The only thing I really want to do as a job is get paid a normal, non-obscene amount of money to write and/or blog and/or make videos about the handful of things I really like and know a lot about. I suppose this is called being a cOnTeNt CrEaToR, but I'll be damned before I call myself that. The twin pressures of late stage capitalism x algorithmic culture may have reduced all acts of human media creation to "content" in the eyes of billions, but not this guy.
The next day:
Something that's held me back from making digital things (blogs, videos, ebooks, etc) for a living was and is how uncomfortable I am asking people to pay for things I make. This is a holdover from the bad old days where I barely considered myself worthy of kindness, let alone love and support.
The prolific run that I'm on —— a blog post every weekday since August 11 —— has shown me that I have a kind of discipline that I didn't before. It's also helped me enjoy the internet again after a few years where all I could see was the noise and not the signal. Add in that I think the tide is turning against the folks hellbent on destroying or otherwise weaponizing the internet and I think conditions may well be optimal for me to actually make some headway into things I want to make.
More to come, obv, but for now I will leave you with this and my sincere thanks for reading my dumb blog (and maybe, in the future, the other things).
